New Birth Missionary Baptist Church & Other Churches Change Practices, Educate Due to Coronavirus…

Hello World,

I was already a bit of a germaphobe anyway, but I felt kind of bad about the fact that I generally don’t like to touch people’s hands unless I know them like that. But now, I don’t care if we’re in church, I’m waving “Hey” from a safe distance and blowing air-kisses. And on top of that, I’m putting on hand sanitizer like it’s lotion.  Finally, if you look like you may be sick with anything, I’m giving you the screw face and heading in the opposite direction. Don’t judge me unless you’re Jesus. This  coronavirus is something serious – so serious that President Trump jammed up already heavy traffic on a Friday afternoon no less here in the A to meet with Centers of Disease Control (CDC) officials to discuss the outbreak.

And likewise, churches, one of the many places where large numbers of people gather on a regular basis, are responding as they should. According to The Christian Post, local pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church recently met with his church about how they are responding to the issue.

“You’ll notice that we have, proactively here at your church, as of Sunday we now have at every exit, every entrance, we now have hand sanitizing stations because we want to be mindful and we want to be proactive,” he said.

The megachurch pastor also urged his church to start checking more frequently on their older adult family members since they are among the most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

“This is where we have to start functioning and operating as family,” he told his church.

Catholic churches in Atlanta are changing the way they conduct communion. According to CBS46, this statement below came from the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Given the ongoing concern over COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus, we have decided to suspend distribution of the Precious Blood for the time being. We feel we would eventually have to take this action and hope that taking it early will allay any fears people have now and demonstrate our concern for the health and safety of our congregations.

Individual pastors can decide whether or not to suspend the exchange of peace. Many pastors have already taken these precautions to prevent the spread of flu in their communities.

And finally if you want to just stay home and not even go to church, that’s an option for some churches…Pastor Andy Stanley, who leads North Point Community Church, Buckhead Church, Browns Bridge Church, Gwinnett Church, Woodstock City Church, and Decatur City Church, disseminated a letter titled “Permission to stay home!” to his members, according to WSB-TV.

“If you’ve been exposed to a person with the coronavirus or the flu or have recently traveled to a CDC Level 2 or 3 country (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, Hong Kong, or Japan), please take a couple of Sundays off. If you or your family members are experiencing or have recently experienced symptoms associated with the flu or the common cold (fever, persistent cough, headache, chills, or unexplained rash), we ask that you take a couple of Sundays off as well,” Stanley said in his email.

And on the other hand, some religious leaders have taken a bizarre approach to the coronavirus issue…Reportedly, former televangelist Jim Bakker is selling a fake coronavirus cure…SMHH (Shake My Holy Head)….From The Huffington Post, check out this headline — “New York AG Warns Televangelist Jim Bakker To Stop Selling Fake Coronavirus Cure.” An article excerpt is below.

The New York attorney general’s office has ordered disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker to stop misleading consumers about a fake cure for coronavirus.

Lisa Landau, chief of the AG’s Health Care Bureau, sent a cease and desist letter to Bakker on Thursday threatening legal action if he fails to stop touting his “Silver Solution” as an effective treatment for the deadly virus. Landau wrote that she was “extremely concerned” about his latest promotion because there is no specific medicine to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus.

“Any representation on the Jim Bakker Show that its Silver Solution products are effective at combatting and/or treating the 2019 novel coronavirus violates New York law,” the letter warned.

How do you feel about these churches’ responses to coronavirus? (I’m not even getting into what Jim Bakker is doing…Wow…)  How are you changing your behavior? (This is some Walking Dead stuff, right?)

Seven Scriptures to Dispel F.E.A.R. About Ebola…

Hello World,  hazmat

It’s time to get back in the Word again…I live in metro Atlanta…yes, that’s right…Ground Zero for Ebola treatment in the entire United States of America…

I have started carrying hand sanitizer and every time someone sneezes or sniffles near by me, my mind starts spinning all kinds of dramatic scenarios…What if she has Ebola? What if he has been in contact with someone who has Ebola? What if she is a family member of the nurse who has been transported to Atlanta for care?

I have even considered walking around like this…

So when my F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real) of anything starts getting bigger than my faith in Jesus…It’s time to get back in the Word and dispel it…Below are a few verses to help me and you when we are tempted to make our own hazmat suits, avoid the area of town where the CDC and Emory are located or stay home altogether…

  1. I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4…
  2. The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
  3. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3
  4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
  5. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
  6. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28
  7. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “”Abba,” Father.” Romans 8:15

These verses help me to realize that my life and times are in God’s hands alone…God had an appointed time to bring me here and even though I don’t like to think about it, God has an appointed time for me to leave here…In the mean time, I will trust God and carry hand sanitizer…In other words, I trust God and I use the common sense that He gave me, but outside of that, that is all any of us can do…at least individually…

But here is something we can do collectively…let’s pray for those in West Africa who are suffering from Ebola, pray for those in the healthcare industry all over the world (my husband is in the healthcare industry), pray for those nurses here in the U.S. who are sick with Ebola and pray for the family of Thomas Eric Duncan (Read a touching article about his funeral in The New York Times )and all families who have lost members of their family due to the deadly virus…and sending some money to worthy and reputable organizations who are combating Ebola wouldn’t hurt either…

Any thoughts?

Act Against AIDS appears at FSO (For Sisters Only)

Hello World,

From left to right, Melyssa Ford, Shanebrae Price, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Robert E. Bailey II & Dr. Kathleen Green Ruth

Yesterday, I attended the 20th year celebration of “For Sisters Only,” which is hosted by V-103 and WAOK radio stations. It’s hard to believe that I started going to this event( a cornucopia of businesses, exhibits, concerts, celebrities and more directed toward women) as a recent college graduate, and it is still going strong! I remember being so excited when one year I literally ran into Dré of OutKast, and he took a picture with me. Back then, he could freely walk around without too much of a ruckus…but that was back in the day when I was young, I’m not a kid anymore…don’t act…you know the lyrics 🙂

And since I have grown up since then, I’m not as drawn to the celebrity/concert component of FSO….I’m more drawn to the activism component of this great event now. So I decided to attend a HIV/AIDS panel discussion moderated by Robert E. Bailey II of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The panel discussion was held as a part of Act Against AIDS, a five-year national communication campaign launched by the CDC and the White House to combat complacency about the HIV/ AIDS crisis in the United States.

Robert E. Bailey II speaking with the audience.

The panel discussion included actor and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph, who is an AIDS activist in her own right and my soror; model Melyssa Ford, Shanebrae Price, an HIV Prevention outreach specialist with SisterLove Inc. and Dr. Kathleen Green Ruth with the CDC. The discussion was held on the main stage just before the concerts kicked off so many younger people had started congregating –  a prime opportunity to have a real discussion about HIV/AIDS prevention.

Some of the startling statistics revealed in the panel discussion:

  • Although the annual number of new HIV infections has remained stable overall from 2006 to 2009, there was an estimated 21 percent increase in HIV incidence for people aged 13-29 years old.
  • About a million people are living with HIV, and one in five of them don’t even know they are affected.
  • About half of the million of people living with HIV are black.

Some of the helpful initiatives and tools revealed in the discussion:

Price told the audience about Healthy Love parties the organization hosts with small groups of women in various settings to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention. Price said she helps the women to learn their ABCs. A is for Abstinence as complete abstinence from sex is a surefire way to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. And if you cannot be abstinent, she advocates choosing option B which stands for being faithful or monagamous in a committed relationship. And if you choose option B, you must also choose C for constant, consistent and correct condom use.

Ford said she carries around her status papers with her and has launched a non-profit organization LESS (Literacy, Etiquette, Strength, Self) is More to educate young women formally and informally abour various issues such as HIV/AIDs prevention.

Ralph said that although the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a quilt which includes the names of

Of course, I had to get the soror shot in...lol...Sorors Holness & Lee Ralph on deck...

those who have lost their lives to AIDS, is 55 miles long, only a half of a mile of the quilt is dedicated to people of color. She advised audience members to go to aidsquilt.org to have the names of their loved ones added.
