Season 2 of the “Preachers of L.A.” Starts Tonight!

It’s time to peek into the lives of our favorite “reality” preachers again tonight! Season 2 of the “Preachers of L.A.” airs tonight on Oxygen at `10 p.m./9 p.m. CST…Below is a trailer for the new season…

Below is an interview with Bishop Noel Jones about what unfolds in this new season…

Last season on Preachers of L.A., Bishop Noel Jones was featured largely in the context of his relationship with Loretta. (Yes, they’re still friends, and they’re still a source of controversy on Season 2!) But, this season you’ll get to know the bishop on a different level: the professional one. We spoke to the Bishop about his international ministry, his modernized view, and his inability to slow down! Watch more of the Bishop’s story on Season 2, premiering August 20 at 10/9c!

Last season you were worried about your health. Have you slowed down?

No I haven’t slowed down. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. You gotta do what you gotta do. When time comes to put the brakes on, I will. Just have some back pains. I did an epidural and I think it’s working somewhat. They say it’s progress. We’ll see what happens!

What was the outcome of Season 1 for you?

It has been very positive. What I was trying to postulate certainly came across: no man is perfect. The show gave people access by screen to an environment that 95% of the viewers never had. People began to see me in a more congenial, personal light. TV has a way of making people feel like they know you.

Is it uncomfortable letting people into your personal life?

It’s not uncomfortable. My problem has always been to try to create more distance from the public!

Spelman College’s WISDOM Center Celebrates 10th anniversary with Ministry Conference & Book Launch

As the last few days of January slip by, I hope your year is off to a wonderful start…If you need some divine inspiration to chart a path for the rest of 2013, a visit to Spelman College this weekend may be in order…

The school’s WISDOM Center is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary beginning this weekend and continuing throughout the year. This year-long celebration, entitled “A Legacy of Women in Transformational Ministry, will be inaugurated on Friday, Feb. 1 with an awards ceremony featuring the official launch of the center’s new anthology, “If I Do What Spirit Says Do: Black Women, Vocation, and Community Survival,” followed by a book signing. The anthology includes essays by theologians, religious scholars, preachers and community leaders who presented during the WISDOM Center’s 2006 global conference. The evening will conclude with the Wisdom Café,  which will feature spoken word artists, and jazz, and gospel selections by faculty, staff, alumnae and students.

On Saturday, Feb. 2, the center is hosting it’s one-day ministry conference “Finding Your Way Home: Transitions, Transformation and Triumph,” which promises to include women pastors, clergy wives, lay leaders and students for a series of workshops and discussions that will explore issues such as life/work balance, resources for inner strength, overcoming personal challenges, transforming the mind and spirit, and the personal and family struggles of women in ministry. Some of the workshop titles are: Dream a Bigger Dream, Understanding and Balancing Our Roles as Women of Faith, and Overcoming Brokenness, Betrayal, and Bitterness. Some of the speakers will be: Reverend Renita Weems, Ph.D., co-pastor, Ray of Hope Community Church, Nashville, Tenn.; Beth-Sarah Wright, Ph.D., independent scholar and first lady of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Ga. and Lisa Williams, founder and executive director, Living Water for Girls, Atlanta, Ga.

Finally, on Sunday, Feb. 3, the weekend will culminate with a worship service at Sisters Chapel with brief sermons presented by three Spelman alumnae.

Local Church Debuts Full-Length Feature Film This Weekend!

Inspired by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga. (the church that produced such films as “Facing The Giants,” “Fireproof” and “Courageous”), The Church at Chapelhill in Douglasville, Ga. is releasing a Christmas film “Surrendered – The Story of Jay Harding” this weekend. The film is about family man Jay Harding (played by David McIntyre) who faces the biggest decision of his life at Christmas time, after losing almost everything he cherished in his life. The movie will be shown on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18 at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the church, 5357 Chapel Hill Rd, Douglasville 30135. And it is free to see the movie!

I’m excited about this movie for a couple of reasons. I love it when churches go big and innovative!  Obviously, this movie was a labor of love and faith. During a week this past August, the film was written by Brett Divine who also produced, directed and edited the feature. A cast and crew was assembled through volunteers in the church and production began on September 23, 2011.The budget for the film was $15,000 which allowed the crew to purchase a camera, lenses and a few other necessities. All of the locations and props were donated by members of the church. The film was shot in the West Atlanta area in September & October 2011, and was completed by members of the church. All of the cast and crew were volunteers.

AND I’m also excited because my Soror Kim Howard, who plays Jay Harding’s wife Kim Harding in the movie, is starring in the film! I cannot wait to see it this weekend, and I hope you take some time out of your Christmas shopping to see this film too! Check back on my blog on Wednesday, Dec. 21 for my review of the film.
