Be Ye Transformed by the Renewing of My Closet aka Makeover Me Pleaz!

Hello World,

My Michelle O. Dress...

A week from this Saturday, on May 29, I will be the featured speaker at the 31st Annual Christian Women’s Retreat banquet at the Westin Atlanta Airport Hotel…Yep, that’s right little ole me is the keynote speaker…This is the first time that I will be speaking at this type of event and I’m excited and scared…

I will be speaking on this verse…

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:1-2

Since the key word is transformed, I’ve been thinking about that word…and suddenly it occurred to me that maybe I need to transform my closet too…I mean I will be speaking to a whole room of women, and I want to be on point…it’s true, most women do dress for each other…At 36, I think I have an idea of what looks good on me – basically since I have wide hips and a small waist, I have to wear clothing that comes in at the waist and flares at the hips…other than that, I don’t know much…Recently, I’ve become a baller on a budget but I do think I need to splurge within reason on a few timeless pieces that will upgrade or transform my closet if you will…I do have the sense to know that what you can get away with at 26 will not work at 36…I’m also wondering if I should have my makeup done for my speech…what do you think?..also, I’ve  posted my outfit for the evening…and if you are wondering, yes, I wore this dress (my Michelle O. – inspired dress)  to church on Easter Sunday and to the ABC News’ “Nightline” debate, “Why Can’t A Successful Black Woman Find a Man?”  Do you think I should wear this dress? Do you like it? What about the shoes? What are the “must haves” for the closet of a professional woman in her ’30s?

On a side note, I dated this guy about two years ago that whipped out a clothing catalogue on of our dates…He told me that I worked out way too much to not dress well…I could have been insulted, but I wasn’t…He ended up buying me what is still my favorite winter outfit for Christmas…(I may have to call him for some help…)ah, the adventures of dating…

Anywho, any thoughts?

P.S. Something about this post makes me remember this song… 🙂 Love Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam…

  1. Dear Jackie,
Wow, congratulations on the opportunity to carry the message of redemption as a keynote speaker. The outfit is terrific, a make over wonderful, but accessorize with the light of Christ! I noticed that in most of your pictures, you do not smile. I hope that you smile at the event, so people can see that a Christ-filled life is one of joy and love.

I remember the first time I spoke to a large Christian group – it was a bit intimidating. I had a revelation before walking to the podium – it wasn’t about me; it was about carrying the message to people just like me – we are all alike. When I saw the people as my brothers and sisters, I was able to be more real and available. The talk went fantastically.

Oh and one more thing – here’s the speaker’s prayer:
    “God, fill my mouth
    with all your stuff.
    and close it when
    I’ve said enough.
    Amen.”

    Break a leg!

    • I LOVE that speaker’s prayer…I will be sure to pray that just before I open my mouth and yes, I do need to smile more 🙂

  2. I love the dress and shoes. yes, have your makeup done. Make sure brows are done. And add a pair of lashes. I’m all about the cute factor.

    • I hadn’t thought about lashes…I think I will…I need to stop by your shop and see what you have by the way…

  3. LOVE the outfit and I agree, a great outfit (namely shoes, accessories and hangbag) go a long way!!!! I also agree that adding some fabulous accessories will make everything complete. Because of the neck line I think you can get away with earrings, a bracelet and maybe a classic pin/broach. Versus a full make over, I’d suggest a trial run at your favorite cosmetics counter and purchasing a few pieces at home. I have gotten several make overs and no matter how much I tell them to “go light” ~ “I don’t wear a lot of make-up” I ALWAYS leave feeling like a drag queen and my face feeling cakey. This works for some people, but those of us who don’t wear make-up each day I think it can be too much. You want to look fabulous, but like your beautiful (natural) self :-). Do you ever wear your hair pinned up? Just some thoughts. Work it ~ I am sure you will do a wonderful job!!!

    • A nice new handbag would be nice…and I do need to think accessories…I’ve had a few makeovers as well…I don’t mind the dramatic look for pictures but in real life, I end up feeling like I’m way overdone…And I have worn my hair up before…I will ponder that too..and thanks for the vote of confidence!

  4. With a Michelle O insired dress, how could you go wrong. Very pretty, belted is in and great for you. Anything that accentuates an already small waist is perfect. The shoes are great. Classic pumps with a little platform (for an updated look) No need for a necklace. Some nice earrings (hoops may be a little too casual), bold bracelets and a clutch. Congratulations on the gig!

    • Hey Soror, thanks for stopping by my blog…I love the idea of bold bracelets…I don’t have enough jewelry…I like unique, classy pieces but they are hard to find if you are on a budget…I appreciate all of the feedback I’ve received thus far…

  5. Love, love, love the outfit and agree with everyone else. Get some classic accessories (handbag, necklace/earrings [black pearls]) to set the outfit off and you will be good to go. I’m so excited for you!

  6. Black pearls sounds pretty, a very simple necklace, classic bracelet and a serious black purse. I know a great make up person and you know I know about the lashes. I have two places in mind both very good and not that expensive depending upon what services you get. I will send my suggestions to you.

I know you will do great! Want to discuss this with you off line.
