Lovapalooza….The Good, The Bad and & The Ugly of Love on Valentine’s Day…

Hello World, me and Rob

Happy Valentine’s Day to you! And hopefully, you ARE expecting a HAPPY Valentine’s Day…This is my first Valentine’s Day as a married lady so I am feeling grateful for the love that God sent to me…In fact, Valentine’s Day will forever be special to me for a few reasons…Yesterday marked the 4th anniversary of my first date with my hubby! (Monday was our six-month anniversary!) One the ways that I knew he was the one God had for me is how he pushed me to write my first book…Above is a pic of us at my book release party, and my first book After the Altar Call: The Sisters’ Guide to Developing a Personal Relationship With God came out on Feb. 14, 2012! So we have a lots of good to celebrate tonight!

But not everyone is expecting good today…Unfortunately, some are actually expecting bad…and if it’s very bad, it can get ugly…so to make this post interesting I’ve decided to share some of the good, bad and ugly stories I’ve heard about love this week…And I’m offering my prediction on whether the people in these stories can expect the good, the bad or the ugly today…

1. My current favorite talk show host Wendy Williams (my all-time favorite is Oprah) is hosting “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” tonight at 10/9c on the Investigation Discovery channel…I am obsessed with this channel…Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but the juiciest stories are those that involve crime…LOL…I know…My husband doesn’t get it either…I predict these stories will be good although the people featured in the stories are likely expecting ugly today….Below is a preview video…

2. “Why I Don’t Love My Fiancee'” This is a blog post that I came across earlier this week. From the title, you would expect not-so-good, but it is very good actually. This is a sweet story of young (he’s only 21 years old) Michael J. Pittman and his 20-year-old fiance’ Amanda…They are getting married in approximately 130 days 🙂 I predict a good Valentine’s Day for him….

3. “Georgia sheriff cancels Valentine’s Day due to weather” If you live in Georgia or have access to the news stations, you know that this is the second time in just a couple of weeks that we have been snowed and iced in…..and this particular snowstorm/ice storm happened to fall on Valentine’s Day week so the Oconee County County Sheriff’s Office announced that Valentines Day has been CANCELLED from a line North of I-16 to the Georgia/Tennessee border. Sheriff Scott Berry posted on the department’s Facebook page. “Men who live in the designated ‘NO VALENTINE’S DAY ZONE’ are exempt from having to run out and buy lottery scratchers and Hershey bars from the corner stores until February 18, 2014, due to ice, snow, freezing rain.” LOL…This can good or bad depending on how you look at it…If the women in this area wanted Hershey bars, then that’s bad for them, but if they are looking to spend some quality time with their hubbies, that can be very good 🙂

4. “Black History Month: Black Love on ESSENCE Covers Through the Years” ESSENCE has compiled its most stunning black love covers they have featured since 1970…It was heartwarming to see some of the covers from right around the time I was born! Also, it was encouraging to see some of the couples who made the cover of the magazine and are still together today! And sadly, while some of these couples were beautiful together, they are no longer actually together today…It’s mixed bag of what these couples are expecting today, but hopefully the ones that are still together as of today are expecting good…Check out the pic of Oprah and Stedman in their early years together…black history indeed!

5. Usually, at any wedding, the bride is the focal point(sorry grooms)! And this wedding is no different but for an entirely unique reason altogether…Watch what Arianna Pfledere does as she walks down the aisle to meet her hubby-to-be Ryan…So sweet…I predict a good Valentine’s Day for this couple as this is their first V-Day as husband and wife…

6. “I just got engaged and immediately doubted my decision. Here’s why I still said ‘yes'” Another blog post about young love….Here are a few words from Mo Isom’s post. “But the fact of that matter is that as soon as the boyfriend I cherish became the fiancé I promise to cherish for the REST OF MY LIFE, my human nature began to doubt. And I began to realize how much my mind and heart had been crafted by the world, rather than the Word.” A great post about getting engaged at any age…I predict a good Valentine’s Day for them….

7. Season 3 of “Mary Mary,” the reality show featuring gospel duo of sisters Tina Campbell and Erica Campbell, returns on Thursday, Feb. 27  at 9|8c on WE tv. In this season, we will see Tina Campbell dealing with the fallout after discovering her husband Teddy has been unfaithful to her….”Whenever I’m on the road, I think about what my husband did to me. He was unfaithful to me while I was on the road. So I’ve got to wonder, ‘Since you got caught, are you faithful now? Do you really mean that you want to be a better man to me? Or are you still who you were?” Below is a preview video…Hopefully, as this show was likely filmed a while ago, Teddy and Tina Campbell will have a good Valentine’s Day…

Preachers of L.A. : Sayin’ It Like I Mean It…

Hello World,

I must confess when I started hearing about the new reality show “Preachers of L.A.” earlier this year, I thought “here we go.” Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of reality shows. I started watching MTV’s “The Real World,” the first official reality show in college and even considered auditioning to be on the show. But back then, although the show had it’s fair share of likely contrived drama, the show did seem to be a realistic and sometimes even poignant portrayal of the lives of people you would probably never meet. I remember being particularly struck by Pedro Zamora, who revealed that he was living with AIDS. At that time, I had never met someone (as far as I know) that was living with AIDS and his inclusion in the show gave me an opportunity to see someone living and coping with the disease.

But now, chile please, reality shows seem to be scripted, over-the-top, spectacles designed to either launch of the pop culture career of some fame addict or revive the career of people who may be talented but have lost their platforms for whatever reason. But let me not be a hypocrite. Trust and believe I will be watching the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” when season 6 premieres tonight! (Is Todd an opportunist or is he really the one?)

But when gospel artists and other Christians began diving into the swamp of reality programming, I was giving them the side-eye but watching to see what happened. I like Mary Mary’s reality show. They are bonafide celebrities without the show, and their fans are able to see the women behind the award-winning gospel duo. I gave the “The Sisterhood,” which featured preachers wives from Atlanta, a chance, but the fact that some of them weren’t technically First Ladies and some of the crazy things that were said on the show made me stop watching after a few episodes. I guess I wasn’t the only one because the show was canceled. I never watched “Preachers’ Daughters” because I have been a preachers’ daughter for as long as I can remember so I don’t need to see that on television. Is that show still on?

If you’ve noticed, all the reality shows I’ve mentioned above thus far have featured Christian women, and that is to be expected. I bet women are the main target audience of most reality programming anyway. And let’s be real. Women, we can be really messy, and we like some mess too! I’m sure that when I get to heaven, I will no longer like gossip, but right now, I’m praying to be freed from the gossip demon! LOL! And it sure don’t help that I’m a reporter by trade! I never expected men of God to get involved in this mess! My husband can’t stand that I watch the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and even refuses to be in the room when I do. So when I heard about the “Preachers of L.A.,” I was like, “Really, men of God, really?”

So now that the show has been on for a month, I must confess I have watched every episode. And now, I feel I am capable to giving an informed opinion about the latest “reality” offering. I must saying watching a reality show about the life of someone is kinda like being their friend on Facebook. Either you’re opinion of that person will get better or worse, but it won’t stay the same. Prior to the show, I was somewhat familiar with three of the preachers – Bishop Clarence McClendon, Pastor Deitrick Haddon and Bishop Noel Jones.

Here is my opinion of them now:

Bishop Clarence McClendon – I ‘ve really only seen Bishop McClendon as I was flipping through channels either late at night or early in the morning. I’ve never stopped to listen to any of his sermons. He seemed to flashy for my taste. I prefer a more humble looking pastor. Not that you have to have holes in your shoes or anything, but I don’t…something about the flashy look screams salesman. And based on at least one episode where he was arguing with Dietrick Haddon about not going agreeing to speak at churches that couldn’t afford to pay him and accommodate his entourage, my five-second appraisal seems to be right.

Pastor Dietrick Haddon – First of all, this man can blow. Period. The End. No doubt about it. But I must confess, I like him a little bit less after watching the show. I like the way he challenges the other preachers – like the time he challenged Bishop Ron Gibson to show him where the Bible states that “no shacking” is allowed in defense of him considering living with his then fiancee Dominique. But dude is waaaay too emotional for my taste…I’m like “that down a thousand” every.single.episode. But his over-the-top emotionality is not a testament to his character or anything…He actually seems to be refreshingly real about all the contradictions that Christians deal with from time to time living in this fallen world…he just couldn’t be my man with all of that goin’ on…

Bishop Noel Jones – I saw Bishop Noel Jones speak for several nights as the featured speaker at 98th Hampton University Ministers’ Conference in Hampton, Virginia. To say this man is not a enthralling speaker would be wrong. I was captivated every night. But he is coming off too “single and ready to mingle” on the show for me. The woman that he could be dating is Loretta, who is also a business partner. But their relationship is not defined on the show. She is just there. He is cool with her but that’s about it. I went to therapy behind men like that. They cool with me. They just didn’t want to define their relationship with me. We just kickin’ it. Please. In the words of Sweet Brown, “ain’t nobody got time for that!”

Pastor Jay Haizlip – First of all, he is just as cute as he wants to be 🙂 He is a little flashy too with his perfectly coiffed hair and slim fit jeans, but somehow, his image doesn’t rub me the wrong way. Plus, he seems to be a really nice guy. I liked his interaction with the woman in the park who appeared to be an anorexic in crisis. His relationship with his wife also seems to be very genuine. But he’s probably too boring to be featured on the show very much….sad to say…

Bishop Ron Gibson – He’s actually my favorite preacher thus far. I like his Magnum P.I. mustache, but more importantly, I like the way that he continues to reach out to the hood where he came from. The episode in which he brought two O.G.s to a shoe store to try on some church shoes was really nice. (Did he actually buy them shoes though?) And I like the way he is trying to help his sister who is a drug addict. Now, his wife Christy, however, likes to get stuff started. Did y’all see the episode where they had the tea party and invited Bishop Noel Jones’ girlfriend I mean “friend” I mean business partner I mean…I don’t even know what I mean…She know she just wanted to get in their business….

Pastor Wayne Chaney – Hmmm…I don’t what to say about him because he really hasn’t been on the show very much at this point. His wife seems nice, and she is pretty. Her blossoming friendship with First Lady Christy seems to be genuine…I guess more will be revealed…

Did y’all see them on Arsenio last week…Arsenio challenged them to a “Preach Off.” No judgment, but I just cannot imagine my father or Dr. Charles Stanley (my second favorite pastor) taking part in a “Preach Off” not even even when they were younger…Maybe I’m wrong, but I just can’t see it… If you haven’t seen the video, take a look…

And in the second video, they address their haters…Bishop Noel Jones said if you don’t have any haters, you’re not that gifted…Meoowww…

Any thoughts?

Can Women Really Have It All? And at the same time?

Hello World!

You’ve heard those questions before, right? Can women really have it all? And at the same time? If you haven’t heard these questions before, I am referring to the desire for today’s modern women to be wives, mothers and career women. (For the record, these questions are not asked of men…)

These questions and answers were explored in the first episode of “Mary Mary,” the reality show featuring chart-topping gospel duo Mary Mary which will premiere on Thursday, March 29 at 10 p.m. on WE tv. (The reality show will officially start airing on Thursday, April 5 at 9 p.m.)  I went to the Atlanta premiere of the show which was held at Greater’s Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur last week.

Mary Mary on the red carpet...

Between Erica & Tina Campbell (they are both married to unrelated men with the last name Campbell. Isn’t that cute?), they have two husbands, six (soon to be seven) children as Tina is pregnant, three Grammy Awards and a thriving career in the spotlight…

Erica Campbell, Rosie Pisani, vice president senior vice president of marketing for WE tv; Tina Campbell..

In the first episode, Mary Mary are presented with an opportunity to perform at Macy’s Great Christmas Tree Lighting concert on Thanksgiving Day. Mary Mary are excited about the the opportunity to perform in Atlanta in front of 100,000 people in Atlanta, as our city is a top city for their fans! However, Erica & Tina, the wives and mothers, are not too excited to be leaving their families on such a special holiday, particularly since Tina’s oldest daughter Laiah will be performing at a glee concert during that time…

Mama Braxton also came to the premiere...

There is also drama surrounding Erica’s pregnancy as she begins having contractions before a performance. (She has actually had a beautiful baby girl, Zaya Monique, since then who also attended the premiere:) And now Tina is pregnant!) And Mitchell, Mary Mary’s manager, and their sister known as Goo Goo, who is their stylist, have a confrontation! I won’t give it all away…but I will say that if Mitchell had his way, Goo Goo would be good and gone!

Nicci Gilbert formerly of the '90s R&B group Brownstone...

Viewers also get to know Erica & Tina’s mother Honey, who was their first choir director at Evangelistc Church of God in Christ in California. My grade of their first show: A. And I’m not saying it because they are a Christian group with their own reality show. I enjoyed the show because it was positive and had enough drama to get my attention. Plus, they are in their ’30s like me, and I appreciate that realistic black women (even if they are superstars) also have a voice in the sometimes unrealistic reality TV genre..More pics from the premiere are below…

Celebrity photographer Derek Blanks was in the house...

Comedian & Minister John Gray interviewed the duo about their new reality show...He was hilarious!

A pint-sized Mary Mary fan in her quest to win a door prize!

They also performed their new single "Go Get It." The album will be available on May 8.

Each person who attended the premiere was asked to bring a canned good, and the canned goods were donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
