Greenleaf Recap Season 2 Episode 3: A Mother’s Love…

Hello World,

The seeds that were planted last season of OWN’s “Greenleaf” have grown roots and are sprouting like it’s spring as of this episode…This was a character development episode rather than an action-oriented episode.We are finding out what each character is struggling with and how their struggles will require them to act in the future.  Read on for the rest of this Greenleaf Recap Season 2 Episode 3 …

Pills and Potions…

This episode begins with Grace receiving a telephone call that one of Mac’s victims, Danielle, attempted to kill herself by taking a bunch of pulls. The girl has to go to the hospital to have her stomach pumped, and the girl’s mother wants Grace to help her child transfer to another school as she is being bullied. Apparently, the other kids discovered that she had a sexual relationship with Mac and terrorize her because of it. After Danielle tells Grace about what happened, her final question to Pastor Grace is, “Why isn’t he in jail?” Mac may not be in jail, but Grace will make sure that he is punished one way or another…

Kevin Satterlee, who has returned to the Greenleaf estate finally, is not taking pills. But he is drinking some sort of potion that he received from his gay conversion therapy group leader. Apparently, whenever he has homosexual thoughts, he is supposed to drink the potion. So what is that elixir made of anyway? Sounds like he is sipping on sizzurp to me. Whatever it is, he may need a case of it because his mother is coming to town from North Carolina to meet her new grandson Nathan and she has a lot of questions. One question she wants answered is why is she just being allowed to see her grandson when his birth was planned for a specific date? She also wants to cook some sort of stew at the Greenleaf estate to welcome her grandbaby. It must be a family ritual of some sort.

The Sins of the Father…

Jacob has encountered a stumbling block in building the new Triumph building across the street from Calvary. Apparently, the land has drainage issues and a hefty chunk of change is needed to pay for the drainage issues to be resolved. Jacob meets with his boss Basie Skanks to tell him about what is going on, but Basie is still enthusiastic as ever. He tells Jacob, “Today’s tests (or is it tussles?) are tomorrow’s testimonies” and that he is David against Goliath! He encourages Jacob to visit a Ms. Clara, a wealthy member of Calvary, to ask for money. Apparently, she is nouveau riche as she acquired her wealth via the lottery. (So Ms. Clara is my former Tae Bo instructor from years ago…Does anyone still do Tae Bo anymore?) I’m thinking Jacob is pretty bold to approach a Calvary member about money to build another church, but she tells Jacob, “Not everyone wants to work in their father’s shadow forever.” But I still didn’t see her writing a check or slipping something in his pocket. Jacob knows he’s wrong for asking a Calvary member for money to build a Triumph building…

Jacob’s daughter Zora is up to no good as well. She’s not too happy to be living in a new location first of all. She calls her bedroom a closet. However, there are some perks to moving to Triumph territory. She is in close proximity to her new boo Isaiah, a singer at Triumph. Although Sophia was the one who originally was crushing on Isaiah, Zora seems to have no qualms about moving in on him. But in her defense, Isaiah never showed real interest in Sophia although he did invite her to see him rehearse once…presumably his motive was to get close to Sophia’s cousin all along though. But on the other hand, Zora is wrong for getting Sophia to cover for her when Zora and Isaiah sneak off somewhere when they are supposed to be at a Triumph youth conference.

Zora isn’t the only one having difficulty getting used to their new digs. Jacob’s wife Kerissa does not even pretend that she likes their new home although Grace tells her she’s done a great job decorating the humble parsonage. Kerissa tells Grace, “If you hadn’t come back, we wouldn’t be living here.” I’m not sure if that is the truth. Although Lady Mae wanted Bishop to groom his son to take his place at Calvary one day, I don’t think Bishop was ever really sold on the idea. And with Grace, his favorite, back in town, Jacob may just need to get comfortable at Triumph and in his little bitty house. Of course, all of this was set in motion because of Basie’s plot to bring Bishop down for killing Basie’s father, which Jacob doesn’t know about yet…

Kissing You…

It seems that Grace has finally put her flirtation with Noah in the past as she plants a kiss on Darius’ cheek after their second date! In fact, she tells him that she feels like her time back at Calvary has seemed like she was “cleaning up the past” but now she feels like she is in present! The right man will have you feeling like you are living your best life now! Having you doing new thangs and what not. Darius takes Grace to a batting cage to get some of her pent up anger about Mac out of her system. It feels so good to Grace that she holds on to that bat…

Kerissa needs to be kissing up to Basie’s wife Tasha who wants to help decorate the parsonage. But instead of kissing up to the First Lady, who looks more like a club chick with her faux fur and herringbone chain, she shuts her down. Tasha is going to get Kerissa in the future as it’s obvious that Kerissa thinks she’s above the woman…I don’t know how and I don’t know when but it’s coming…

Kevin’s mother continues to press her son about why she hasn’t been allowed to visit her new grandson until weeks after he was born. The question finally disrupts a family dinner where her stew was supposed to be served to the Greenleaf family. She follows Kevin when he excuses himself and he finally reveals that while he has “kiss and made up” with Charity, he was staying at a hotel for a while. When she asks him what he could have done to be staying in a hotel, he looks at her until she discerns the answer. Apparently, his mother knows that he is gay…

Batter Up…

As we’ve already discovered, Calvary is having cash issues, but Bishop and Lady Mae have some plans in the works. One of their plans was buy a radio commercial advertising their Fall Revival. But they are mortified when they listen to their commercial which is immediately followed by a Basie Skanks ad. They also discover that Jacob went to see Ms. Clara! Lady Mae, who had been missing Jacob in the Greenleaf estate, has had enough! She decides to confront Jacob and tell him the truth about the game that Basie is playing. At the site of Triumph’s new building, Lady Mae tells Jacob that Basie is Darryl’s son and Jacob is being used to get back at Bishop! Instead of being upset about it, Jacob tells his mother that if he is being played, he has nothing to lose at this point. “I’m 47 years old and have nothing under my belt but kids. There’s no place for me at Calvary and time is running out.” Wow! I see where Jacob is coming from…

Grace believes that she has unleashed much of her anger about her uncle until she shows up for work at Calvary and discovers that her assistant’s daughter,  another one of Mac’s victims, ran into him in town…She goes to the lowly apartment complex where Mac now lives and bashes in the windows of his truck with a bat. (She either went Beyoncé from “Lemonade” or Negan from “The Walking Dead”  on him depending on your pop culture interests…) Mac comes running out and stares at his niece. He looks both hurt and indignant. He doesn’t say a word in this episode but something tells me he will have a lot to say in future episode…

Greenleaf Recap Season 2 Episode 1: A House Divided…

Wow, the season opener for OWN’s Greenleaf was more explosive than the season finale ( click on this link to read the recap) with all of the family secrets revealed in this episode!

Well, let’s get into this Greenleaf recap cuz babay, it’s a lot to break down…

Burn Baby, Burn…

Like a good novel, the show starts off with an explosive beginning. The police show up at the Greenleaf estate and announce that the Bishop is under investigation for allegedly burning his first church building down years ago and manslaughter since someone died in the fire! Mac shows up at the same time as the police to gloat in front of the Greenleaf family who are stunned silent except for Gigi aka Grace. Grace follows her uncle as he is about to leave following the police’s announcement that Bishop needs a lawyer and cannot leave town. When she confronts him about his revelation as he is the one who revealed the Bishop’s sin to the police, he replies that he was “forced to pull less holy strings” since Bishop wouldn’t spring him from jail. He then tells her he has more hot secrets where that came from, secrets so hot that he can “walk away with nothing on his back but hot wind.” Yes, hunty…if he’s going down as a sexual offender, he’s burning down the Greenleafs with him!

I Been Drankin’…

Meanwhile, Oprah, I mean Mavis McCready, sister -in-law of Bishop Greenleaf, been drankin’ chile…(So, it’s hard to watch to Oprah in this state because I know I’m looking at the Queen of Talk aka the boss at OWN)…Well, now that she is no longer a club owner (thanks to her brother Mac….Wayment, I just realized that the names of the McCready family all start with M…Mac McCready, Mae (aka Lady Mae) McCready Greenleaf and Mavis McCready…M is for molestation, perhaps? More on that later…) she’s taken to the bottle. She wakes up with a big ole bottle of likka on her night stand…She’s also taken up with a young lover who comes in to the bedroom wearing some black briefs and a guitar hanging from his neck! It’s on a Sunday as she tells her boy toy, “Lonzo, get your behind (that’s not the word she uses though but I’m not cussing here) to church.” Bwwaaa, she sending her man to church like she’s his mama…and maybe she is…even though she will not be in anybody’s sanctuary for Sunday morning services…

Give Until It Hurts…

Pastor Grace is in the pulpit trying to get folk in the congregation to pledge money to support the church as a Fall Revival is coming up. But even Grace cannot get the flock to part with their funds so pledges are down by 40 percent! Lady Mae confronts her arch enemy, I mean her daughter, about her lackadaisical sermons as Grace must be the problem. But Grace tells her the truth and says it’s been three months since the police brought a case against Bishop and he hasn’t said a word about it yet to the congregation. That is the reason that the pledges are down. As usual, instead of receiving the truth, Lady Mae says to her daughter, “Your terrible pride is going to destroy us all.” What is she talking about? Would you continue to give to a church in which the pastor or bishop was brought up on charges but didn’t address the charges in front of the congregation?

Lady Mae does speak to her husband privately about the charges while she is getting ready for breakfast in the bathroom. She tells the Bishop, who walks in as she is applying her lipstick, that she cannot stop thinking about Darryl, the caretaker of the church who died in the fire. Bishop replies, “He wasn’t supposed to be there.” The two are a united front though because in front of the family at breakfast when Lady Mae sees Jacob reading a newspaper, she asks him if there is any “fresh libel” in it and says people love to see the “high brought low.” Also at breakfast, Bishop declares that he will preach again from the book of Ezra, a book about  Jerusalem’s restoration and the building of the second temple following Babylonian exile. Chile…

Living Single…

Charity Greenleaf Satterlee meets with Carlton, the gay choir director at Calvary Fellowship World Ministries and his partner Kyle (Just Kidding! That’s the actor T.C. Carson’s name when he was on “Living Single,” one of my fave shows from the ’90s). Sadly, she tells them that her labor will be induced after she lost one of the twins she is carrying. She lost the baby due to the stress of discovering that her husband is gay or bisexual. Although she is still married to Kevin Satterlee, it’s clear she could end up living single this season as their marriage is still strained.  After her meeting with Nigel and his partner, she meets with Jabari Johnson, a handsome record producer who is interested in producing Charity’s album. He tells her, “it sounds like you went through something. ” So could Jabari be Charity’s new man in the future?

Interrupting their meeting, Kevin says he wants to speak with his wife alone. He pleads with her to come to one of his meetings. She tells him she is skeptical about him attempting to “pray the gay away.” Obviously, he is attending meetings for a gay conversion therapy program.

Backstabbers…

Sleazy ole Pastor Basie Skanks is back and hosting a groundbreaking for the Christian community center he plans to build across the street from Calvary. And as we know from Season 1 of Greenleaf, Jacob is supposed to be running the center after it opens. Although the Greenleafs weren’t too happy with Joseph leaving Calvary for Triumph initially, they apparently got over it as Bishop, Grace, and Sofia show up for the groundbreaking. A concert is held on the site to celebrate the new center. Some slim, light-skinned gospel singer named Isaiah Hambrick has got Sofia in her feelings as she watches him perform. I guess I would have felt that way too at her age. He was spinning around on stage like he was Ricky Martin from Menudo. (Yes, I remember when…) After young Isaiah performs, Pastor Basie announces that a new community center will not be on the site after all. In fact, Triumph’s second location will be there, across the street from Calvary. Most importantly, Jacob will be the new pastor. Bishop and Grace stare at one another in disbelief! And then to demonstrate his Pastor Skanks’ increasing star power, The Kirk Franklin gets up and performs “123 Victory.” Victory, indeed…

Meanwhile, Mac, who is now on the sex offender registry as leaflets bearing his face and criminal status have been placed on car windshields in the church parking lot, approaches his sister Lady Mae. He tells her that in light of Bishop being investigated for arson and manslaughter, he is here for her. She says, “After what you did, we’ll never be family again.” Without hesitation, he replies “Until you need me.”

Across town, Mavis shows up at her old bar with her boy toy Alonzo, whose career she is ‘managing,’ in tow and demands a drink. But the bartender refuses to serve her as its clear she’s getting sloshed on the regular. In fact, Bishop shows up at the bar sometime later and helps her get home safely. She tells him she is trying to find her way after she lost her club. What happened to Alonzo? Bishop is obviously close to Mavis, but I don’t understand why. There is more there than being in-laws. Not a romantic connection mind you, but something…

Grace also finds out another reason the congregation aine coming off the coins anymore. Apparently, church members don’t like the fact that their choir director is married to another man and flaunting it around the church, according to Betty Wilcox, who is on the board. Grace also confronts her father about the allegations. “Did you do it Daddy?” Although he has been silent for three months about the accusations with everyone except for Lady Mae, he finally tells his daughter the truth. He tells her that when he was a young pastor, he bought an old church building that turned into a money pit. So when Mac asked him if he wanted Mac to handle it, he agreed. Obviously, Bishop wanted to get the insurance money after the building burned down. The caretaker Darryl James wasn’t supposed to be in the basement of the church and he died in the fire. And Bishop also tells Grace that he will return to church to preach on Sunday. “I don’t preach perfection. I preach grace.” I guess the Bishop must not know Romans 6:1-2. “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?“

Kiss of Death…

Leave it to Lady Mae to save the day when God isn’t working fast enough for the Greenleafs! She goes to see her father who is in hospice care when she wouldn’t even allow the McCready patriarch onto Calvary grounds on Season 1 of Greenleaf! She puts on the charm like it’s her Sunday best and speaks sweetly to him. He tells her, “You always so sweet” and calls her his “yellow, Daisy Mae” before he plants his lips on hers. Yes, he kissed his daughter which makes me think that the McCready family may be keeping yet another secret. Did he molest Mae as a child? I’m thinking that may be the case when Mavis shows at the Greenleaf estate and busts into a party celebrating the birth of Charity and Kevin’s son. Apparently, she’s fighting mad since Alonzo has moved on after the Bishop had a talk with him. During her rant, she reveals that she and Mae have different mothers. Mae’s mother beat Mavis, and she was forced to sleep in a shed…kinda explains her current outside status…Also, Mavis says that Mae was their father’s favorite and accompanied him on trips to Nashville.

Despite the commotion in the Greenleaf estate, the Bishop is feeling pretty good after he learns that the DA is dropping the charges against him. Apparently, Lady Mae’s father is now refusing to testify against the Bishop.  But Lady Mae has another fire to put out as Jacob reveals that he is moving out.

Revelation…

After Bishop preaches on Sunday, Pastor Basie Skanks shows up in his office. “It must be nice going from straight from the prison to the pulpit without skipping a beat,” he tells him. Although Bishop doesn’t like Pastor per se, he doesn’t understand the pastor’s utter contempt for him until he reveals that he is the son of Darryl James, the caretaker who was killed in the fire!!! He tell him, “By the time I’m done with you, the only thing that’s going to rise to heaven from this church is smoke!”

Ooh whee! This is going to be good!

Greenleaf Recap Season 1 Episode 11: Men Like Trees Walking…

Only Two More 'Greenleaf' Episodes Left!!!

So I’ve missed two weeks of recaps as two weeks ago, I interviewed Deborah Joy Winans who plays Charity on OWN’s”Greenleaf” in place of my weekly recap (if you haven’t checked out “‘Greenleaf’ Star Deborah Joy Winans Shares About New Greenleaf Gospel Album, Her TV Husband & Her Aunt CeCe: My Interview (With Audio, please do so!) and last Wednesday was my wedding anniversary, but babay, I’m back!

I swear (and I don’t LOL) “Greenleaf ” never fails to disappoint! This show just works! I’m not even sure why yet, but I every week, they serve up the drama and I just eat it up!

So on to the recap…

Pain in the Pews…

There’s nothing sadder than a preacher preaching to empty pews, and that is where Bishop Greenleaf is headed if he doesn’t get right with God or somebody…The episode starts with him in an empty sanctuary recalling how he had just preached…He was sweating and shaking and saaanging “my living shall not be in vain” but the congregation was not moved…Correction, some were moving but in the opposite direction….Someone got up and left right in the middle of Bishop’s sermon and the sanctuary wasn’t even full to begin with…

The head deacon or deaconess (which I prefer to call her because how many times do you get to say deaconess) confirms what you can already tell: Attendance and tithes are down at Greenleaf and have been for four weeks! She pleads with the Bishop get a “fresh face” in the pulpit….someone who is “unsullied.” She suggests Jacob or even Grace to which Bishop responds, “She’s the one that got us into this mess.” Yes, Grace, the Bishop’s favorite child, is now on the Bishop’s hit list! He assures the deaconess that Greenleaf will survive it all. But the deaconess replies, “The Lord doesn’t want His church to survive, He wants us to thrive.” Amen and pass the offering plate LOL!

Orange is the New Black…

Mac is finally wearing an orange jumpsuit in prison as he should be after the family secret that he sexually molested his niece is out in the open. But Lady Mae knows that another secret is being kept but this time by the Bishop. Apparently, Mac has something on the Bishop and is using that secret to blackmail him. She tries to get him to share the secret but he remains silent to her anger.

The fallout from the shoot out at church continues to reverberate as $4500 is needed to secure Lady’s Mae’s annual Women’s Day event at the Peabody Hotel, but the money hasn’t been approved by the powers that be at the church although the expenditure is usually approved without issue. Lady Mae decides to take out her own checkbook and write the check for the amount. Let the church say, “Ouch.” How many tithes went into that $4500?!

He’s a Healer…

One of the reasons that I love Grace’s daughter is her inquisitiveness particularly as it relates to Scripture…As the daughter of a pastor, I’m so used to hearing Scripture that I don’t necessarily see the word of God with fresh eyes. But I imagine that if I was introduced to Scriptures a bit later in life, I would have just as many questions (although I still have questions…don’t get me wrong…) Sophia asks her mother Grace, who can still quote Scriptures by heart although she had been away from the church for many years, why did Jesus have to heal the blind man in Mark 8:23-26 twice? You know I’ve never gave it much thought, but why would Jesus, who is the Healer of all healers, have to heal twice to get it right…Obviously, there was a deeper meaning as the blind man says at first, “ I see men as trees, walking.” So this verse is where the title of this show comes from…More to be revealed later in the recap…read on church!

That’s Just My Baby Daddy…

For all of this time, it has been a mystery regarding the identity of Sofia’s father. At one point, I thought her father may been Noah, but we learned in last week’s episode that Ray, a white man that Grace met in Phoenix after she fled from the Greenleaf estate, is Sofia’s father. And despite the fact that Sofia is about that Greenleaf estate life, Ray wants full custody of her as Grace left Phoenix without properly informing him of her plans. She gets served the papers at church…

Speaking of Lawsuits…

Grace is not the only one who is heading to court and finds this out at church…Bishop Greenleaf meets with Alexa’s attorney as the attorney alleges her client was fired without cause. Remember Jacob’s side piece? (Kerissa makes a joke about side pieces as Kerissa and Jacob attempt to help their young son put puzzle pieces together. When the boy picks up a small piece that goes one side of the puzzle, she says Jacob should help as he is good with side pieces…funny…) Alexa’s attorney (and Alexa is in the meeting too by the way) says a lawsuit won’t be filed if the Bishop compensates for her loss. Now with the tithes going down and Lady Mae writing a check for $4500, where is the Bishop supposed to get some cash pray tell?

In a moment of synchronicity, Jacob comes to see his father just as Alexa and her attorney are finishing their meeting with the Bishop…And this isn’t the only time that Alexa is mentioned in the episode…So obviously Alexa will continue to be a temptation for Jacob…

But for the moment, Jacob is not thinking about Alexa and pleads with his father to reinstate him at Greenleaf. Instead of reinstating Jacob, the Bishop attempts to redirect him by reminding him that being a pastor was never his dream and that he only became involved in the church after Grace left. Jacob finally gives up trying to convince his father that he is ready to return to Greenleaf and instead apologizes for getting involved with Alexa. The Bishop says, “Pray for her. She’s chosen a painful path.” What does that mean, saints?!!

Ever Seeing but Never Perceiving…

For all of Sofia’s inquisitiveness with her mother, Sofia is totally quiet in youth Bible study so much so that the leader asks her what she thinks of Mark 8. Although she didn’t know what to think when she asked her mother, she has obviously continued to think about the passage and she has an answer for the leader. She says that every person is rooted in something although we cannot necessarily see it with our natural eyes…I like that…

Gaming the System…

Although Jacob doesn’t necessarily perceive it, his actions are rooted in pleasing his father although he has a funny way of showing it. Since his father won’t reinstate him at Greenleaf, Jacob decides to go to the other megachurch in town – Triumph (where Alexa is a member) – and convince Pastor Skanks to hire him there…Jacob approaches the pastor while he is playing basketball at a gym…The pastor lets out an expletive when he realizes that Jacob, the crown prince of Calvary, is coming to him for a job…Okay, I need at least one pastor, other than Grace, that I can admire on this show…

Instead of simply hiring Jacob, Pastor Skanks (as his name suggests, he really ain’t ’bout nohin’) shows that he is really playing chess rather than basketball and tells Jacob that he must set up a meeting with the Bishop so that Pastor Skanks knows that he didn’t hire the Bishop’s son behind his back…

Almost a Golden Wedding Anniversary…

In the midst of all this, Bishop and Lady Mae are celebrating 45 years together! (Ironically, my parents celebrated 45 years of marriage on Sunday!) Well, let me correct what I noted. Bishop celebrated their wedding anniversary by sending her flowers but he later sees the flowers nearly dead on the floor of her office. If Bishop wants them to make it to their golden wedding anniversary, he better tell Lady Mae everything…

Just Call Me Nicety…

I think my favorite character next to Grace is Lady Mae because she is the champion of being nicety…She can be so nasty but because she says and does almost everything with a smile on her face. You think she is being nice when she is really being nicety…nice plus nasty equals nicety…After she discovers that Melisse,  chief housekeeper at the Greenleaf estate and better known as Lovita Alizé Jenkins-Robinson LOL, is the one who confirmed there was shooting at the church to the media, she turns around and gives her one of those scholarships (you know the ones that are used to keep people quiet). In other words, she has paid for to go to nursing school simultaneously releasing from her job at the Greenleaf estate…

My Secret

So actually Bishop isn’t the only one in the family who is holding on to a secret in the wake of the Mac revelation…Kevin, Charity’s husband, has a secret too…but it’s the worst kept secret on the show…The leader of a local charity Adrian becomes particularly friendly with Kevin and he reveals to him that he doesn’t want to be like his father who left his family when he was a little boy…Adrian assures him he is not like his father…Hmmm…whatever…It’s obvious that that this man has feelings for Kevin and Kevin might be feeling him too…Although Kevin has twins on the way, even his desire to be a good father won’t be enough to squelch his other desires…
