Greenleaf Recap Season 5 Episode 6 : The Sixth Day…

Hello World,

That was a doozie of an episode, right?! A lot of questions for the Greenleaf family were answered though…So let’s not wait another second to get into another exhaustive and entertaining Greenleaf Recap Season 5 Episode 6: The Sixth Day…And let me know if you find a recap better than what you will read right here starting right now…

The Sixth Sense…

This week begins with Bishop and Lady Mae in a tizzy! Rochelle is back and Bishop doesn’t know what to do first. For the time being, he is on the phone with an FBI agent regarding Rochelle. Lady Mae wonders how this woman is “zipping around Memphis like she has a key to the city” when she is really supposed to be in jail.

But Rochelle is not the only thing on Lady Mae’s mind. Bishop is supposed to getting a physical especially since he’s been somewhat forgetful lately. But Bishop aine tryin’ to hear about going to the doctor when “there is a woman out there who wants me dead.” Who wants to get healthy when you’re going to get dead?! And Bishop is especially incensed that Lady Mae still trusts Tara. In fact, Rochelle’s sister is meeting with Lady Mae at the estate, Lady Mae says. “She said she didn’t know Rochelle was back from Mexico. The woman deserves a fair hearing.” I don’t know about that Lady Mae. Blood is thicker than water, and you can’t drink blood…unless you’re a vampire I guess…

Anywho, Bishop doesn’t plan to be there when Tara gets there as he is heading out to meet a building inspector at Mavis’ old club. (Oprah, you coming back soon?)

During this conversation, Grace comes in, but she is not in the convo for long because Darius calls her. He calls her from a new phone as someone stole his phone and laptop while he was in Vegas. Bob Whitmore really, really, really doesn’t want this truth to come out whatever it is… Darius figures he can still salvage what he has discovered so far as he asks Grace to locate some emails on her laptop that he can use. She goes to her suite, gets her laptop and finds what he needs. But as she looks at the emails, somebody is deleting them one by one. Hillary, is that you?

So this next thing really shocked me considering how standoffish he is. So Marcus DeMars aka Yusef Shabazz shows up at the Greenleaf estate just outside the gate where he meets Charity. Something crazy is gonna happen for sure with him around. As Yusef sees the palatial property that is the Greenleaf estate, he says, “All this comes from religion?” Charity tells him that their parishioners likes to see them living good, and Yusef says, “That sounds like something folk tell themselves.” Does your pastor have to be well off for you to look up to him or her? For me, that’s not the case especially at the beginning of his or her career. But I do think that a pastor’s life should reflect wise decisions in every area of his or her life. You may not be rich, but you shouldn’t be robbing Peter to pay Paul if that makes sense…Also, before Yusef does want he came to do, he reminds Charity that what he reveals to her “reporter friend” will not be on the record…

Speaking of crazy, Jacob and Kerissa are still negotiating their separation. Now that they’ve told the ugly truth to Zora, Winkie is next up. From last week’s episode, they plan to tell him in front of a child psychologist. The little boy has decided to don a tie without the input of either of his parents. I guess he has a sixth sense that the death of his family is imminent so he may as well dress up for this funeral. Kerissa makes it clear that this meeting is not an arbitration, but Jacob can’t help but remind her that he does want shared custody. Kerissa replies, “You’re not going to get it.”

Via text, Sophia has been summoned to the cabin by Zora. She wants to send an audition video to a school in New York City, and she needs Sophia’s help to film it. Apparently, her flight is for the next day as Sophia sees a notice on Zora’s phone. In shock, she asks, “Where are you going to stay?” “I’m leaving that open,” Zora replies. Zora’s parents’ divorce has really shaken her up although she is still trying to front like her family breaking up isn’t huge for her. “This divorce has given me so much clarity,” she says. So much clarity that she is literally fleeing to another state without a place to stay…smh…But Zora gonna Zora…We should know this by now…

The Sixth Part of the World…

So Darius and Yusef finally meet. And of course Grace and Charity are there. Yusef reveals that Bob through Edenvale Lending sold second mortgages to people who needed cash, and when they couldn’t pay their bills, Bob took their homes! Its asked who Bob was targeting, and Yusef responds, “Who goes out of his way to look like a friend to the black church?” Grace gets it. “Poor black families.” Bob used Phil’s mother as the “black face” to get to this target. “He was one greedy white man bleeding everyone dry.” The funny thing about this is that Bob is still using a black face to get what he wants. Poor Phil…Not really…Yusef tells them that he never told any of this to his son Phil. “I never wanted him to see his mother like that.” After all of that revelation, Yusef still doesn’t want to go on the record. “My legal situation is such that I’m just background.” What did he do? Hmmm….However, he does tell them that if one person tells the truth about what happened, he will confirm that it is the truth. Also, Yusef hasn’t spoken to Phil in years…Again, what did he do?

Speaking of father-son relationships, Grace tells Darius that Noah has gotten A.J. to take his meds and that they even have a family doctor’s appointment. At this point, Darius makes sure to tell Grace, “Once we get to the bottom of this, we’ll talk about that future.” Obviously, he sees Grace in his future. So are you Team Darius or Team Noah? To me, Noah is Grace’s past although they share a son, but Darius is the man for her future. Despite everything, Charity still sees herself having a future with Phil, in my opinion. That’s why she wants Yusef to speak with him.

Tara finally shows up at the Greenleaf estate to meet with Lady Mae. Again, she reiterates that she didn’t know that Rochelle would make her way back from Mexico to Memphis. “She just showed up!” Tara says. But Lady Mae points out that Tara was in communication with Rochelle and told her about the Greenleafs getting up in her grill. “If she found out that overtures were being made, and I didn’t tell her…” Is Tara scared of Rochelle? As they continue to talk, Tara says, “I’m convinced now more than ever, that God wants to do something with this.” She is referring to the Greenleaf home. If I were Lady Mae, I would say, “Back up, baby girl. Too much blood, sweat and tears have been spilled by the Greenleafs for anyone to reap the harvest of our life’s work.”

And since building a church has been Bishop’s life work, he is moving ahead with his plans to start a new church in Mavis’ old club. He meets with the building inspector to find out what he needs to do to get the building up to code. Rochelle slithers in. “What do you want Rochelle?” Bishop asks. “You do know this is an old bar?” She then says, “It may be easier for you to burn the place down with me in it.” Wow…Again, Bishop tells her that he did not have anything to do with her father burning down in that church. “I had nothing do with that fire.” Do you believe him?

Rochelle tells him that he can keep denying the truth, but the fact that his life is now in  shambles is proof enough that something is amiss in the spiritual realm when it comes to him. “Success is the evidence of holy favor.” She points out that he’s been tossed out his church, he’s about to be evicted from his house and on top of that, he’s building a church in a “stinky bar.” She does make a compelling point. What say you? “Bishop, beware. Until you admit the role you played in the death of my father, nothing you do will stand. Basie should have killed you when he had the chance.” Ouch…So was I the only one that was reminded of that classic line in “The Color Purple?” “Until you do right by me, everything you think about is gonna crumble.” And the fact that this line is spoken in Mavis’ aka Oprah’s club. A coinkydink? I don’t think so…

So Noah and Grace accompany A.J. to the doctor. While he is in with his doctor, Grace tells him that she did find that journal that Noah told her about and that the caretaker was fixated with “that Negro” that kept visiting. And again, she wonders if “that Negro” was Darryl James. Noah says he will check with the neighbors of the estate and see if they remember or know anything about “that Negro.” Grace also asks Noah how he was able to get A.J. to see the doctor, but he says that he thinks Bishop’s officer to have the GTO is what has made him amenable. A.J. has even been showing pictures of GTOs to Noah’s mother, his paternal grandmother.

“Look at you two,” A.J. says with a smile as he comes up to them. He teases them about how he was created. “Boys will be boys,” Grace says, “even at 24.” That was a nice moment. Speaking of nice, Noah tells Grace that if the Greenleafs do give up their home, he has secured a new home nearby for himself and A.J. and that she is welcome to stay with them. Of course, she is. Grace better get ready, Noah and Darius may scrap trying to win her heart.

So Sofia tells her Uncle Jacob and Aunt Kerissa about Zora’s plans and the estranged couple do unite to confront Zora. She confirms that she is moving to NYC. “New York City has a tradition of welcoming young, independent women into its bosom.” That’s true. I once seriously considered relocating there in my early 30s, but I never did make the move. Jacob is careful to say that they don’t want to keep her from pursuing her dreams, but they do need some time to help her think this drastic move through. “Is your ticket still refundable?” He’s relieved when he finds out it is. Additionally, he wants her to consider moving to Hoboken, New Jersey to live with Kerissa’s cousin. “That’s not New York,” she says. Still it’s close enough for Zora to have the NYC experience and create another world for herself which is what she is trying to do…

The Sixth Happiness…

After meeting with Rochelle, Bishop comes back to the estate guns a-blazing. He says to Lady Mae, “You’re not going to give this house to those con artists.” Lady Mae tells him that she had a “fairly reasonable” meeting with Tara. However, she says, “Do you think I want to give her this house?” She is, however, puzzled by the events that led up to them getting the house, particularly since Aaron the attorney thinks the first will looks legitimate. “Rochelle made up a website. She could have made up a will too,” Bishop says. “Why did she leave it to us?” Lady Mae asks. She points out that Bishop didn’t even know Loretta Davis. That is weird. But why would she have left it to Daryl James either? All of this is so weird. “I’m trying to find a holy way through this. Aren’t you?”Lady Mae says.

Just then Jacob interrupts them. He tells his parents that Kerissa is getting ready to leave with Winkie as they will be staying with a family member. He wants them to see her off to make it “somewhat normal.” Lady Mae says, “Marry someone you love next time and be faithful. Then we wouldn’t have to worry about this normalcy.” Another great zinger, Craig Wright!!! And she was right to say that too…


But Bishop is also right in what he says next. After Jacob leaves, he says, “You want to talk to me about holiness, try confessing your sins. You’ve lived a lie for 40 years, and you’re still living it. Keep your holy admonitions to yourself.”In the words of Linnethia “NeNe” Leakes, Bloop…In other words, Lady Mae is a living hypocrite. I know what she needs to tell. Do you? In her defense though, we’re all hypocrites to some extent, but she does need to come all the way clean…

Speaking of coming clean, Judee says some documents that she and Phil are examining in the dark at Calvary appear to be pretty clean. Apparently, the documents have been tampered with I guess. By Darius? Hmmm… Just then, Charity comes in and turns on the light. “Be careful. Everything you say in the dark will be heard in the light of day.” Good line. She walks in with Phil’s father Yusef. Yusef tells his son what happened. “Bob used her Phillip. She used herself.” He says the two were involved in predatory lending. Judee says, “This is all Satan. Daddy loves the black people.” Uh, say what? After all that, Phil says he’s going to call the police and tells his father that he doesn’t want to see him ever again. As she storms out, Charity tells Phil she is going to pray for him. Judee says, “I cannot wait until this building comes down. They’re like pigeons these people. They keep coming back and making noise.” I liked that line as well although I loathe Judee.

So just before Kerissa’s ride shows up, Jacob and Kerissa have a parting discussion. She compliments him about he handled the Zora situation. “We had to break up for you to be the husband I thought you would be when we met.” And Kerissa is so hurt by the end of their marriage that she wonders if they should have ever come together in the first place – even if it means that Zora and Winkie would have never been created by their union. But Jacob tells her that if procreation only happened between two perfect people or a perfect union, everyone would have “stayed in heaven with the angels.” Amen.

How we got here matters, but it matters more that we’re here, I think.  That’s a reason for happiness, right. That we made it here despite everything that could have stopped it. “I’m glad we met,” Jacob finally says. And I believe that he is telling the truth. Kerissa says, “You can have shared custody.” In that moment, I think Kerissa realizes that while he may have never been in love with her, he does love her. And that has to be enough for her as she moves on with her life…

As the entire family sees Kerissa off as they stand on the steps of their home, Lady Mae says, “I have something to say as we enter this season of new beginnings.” First, she says that Grace already knows what she is about to reveal. Then she says, “Grace is the product of an affair between Lionel and myself.” And then, as if she hasn’t just detonated a bomb, she announces that dinner is at 7:30 and goes back inside while her family stands there, frozen in place.

Later on, the three Greenleaf adult children sit outside on the veranda. “That might have been the quietest dinner that table has ever seen,” says Charity. Jacob recalls how much his mother put him through for cheating on Kerissa. Charity continues to marvel that what she thought was perfect was not perfect at all. Maybe this revelation will free Charity from thinking she has to be preacher. I think she is trying to live to the ideal of what she thinks her parents are, but now, she knows the full truth – both of her parents are flawed. Preaching is something that you’re called to do not something you choose to do. And hopefully this means that Jacob will be free to pursue who he really wants to be with rather than choose a woman who he feels is as honorable as his mother because his is mother like everyone else – subject to sin or “freaky” as Zora says in a future scene. LOL

Jacob finally says, “I really don’t care. You’re my sister, Gigi.” But he does go on to say, “I’m glad to know where you got that light skin. Mama’s light, but she’s not that light!” LOL. Charity is upset that Kevin knew the truth before she did, but Grace points out that it was her mother’s secret not her secret.

In another part of the house, Zora discovers Sophia reading the Bible and tells her that she has gotten her back for revealing her “escape plans” to her parents by telling Grace about Sophia’s topless photos. The most important part of this scene, however, is that Sophia felt led to pick up the Bible once again. Maybe knowing about her grandmother’s indiscretion despite her devotion to God shows that loving the Bible and being a person of faith doesn’t mean that you will be perfect nor live a life without pain.

In the midst of all this family time, Darius calls Grace. One of the names that Yusef gave to Darius has proven to be a great source for him. Apparently, this person is willing to tell how Edenvale took his or her house. He asks her to meet him at his house, but when she shows up, he’s not there. Instead, Fernando, Kerissa’s lover,  drives up and offers to take her to see Darius. Where did he come from? When she refuses, he says, ” You better be careful. No one cares about journalists anymore. No one likes a squeaky wheel. Stay out of it.” What happened to Darius?!!! He better still be alive…Is Bob Whitmore capable of murder? Again, well, I guess we will have to keep watching to find out what happens!!! And again, thank God for new content in these COVID-19 times!!!

Greenleaf Recap Season 5 Episode 1: The First Day…

Y’all, as the opening episode for Season 5 of OWN’s Greenleaf just ended minutes ago, my mouth is still agape…So much to think about for this new season, but I won’t waste another minute considering the possibilities because I need to get on with writing this Greenleaf Recap Season 5 Episode 1: The First Day…

First Time I Met the Blues…

Y’all it’s a sad day. Bishop is readying himself to say goodbye to Calvary now that Harmony & Hope Ministries is going to demolish the building. Dressed in all black everything, he is alone in the sanctuary and goes up to the glass podium at front where he surveys the expanse of the empty sanctuary. It’s undoubtedly a majestic space. Too bad it will be turned into rubble. Grace, who is also dressed in black, shows up at his side and lays her head on his shoulder. They eventually walk down the stairs of the stage together. They’re wearing black, but they’re most definitely blue.

In the next scene, they are outside the church where a Harmony & Hope journalist is reporting on the progress of the demolition. As Bishop and Grace watch, posters with Bishop’s image on them are thrown into a dumpster as if trash is simply being thrown away. Grace says to her father, “Why did you make us come here? Doesn’t that break your heart?” At first, he eloquently disagrees with Grace until a cross structure is thrown into the back of a truck with absolutely no grace at all. “That makes me sad,” Bishop says. “To see a cross handled like that. Maybe you’re right. Maybe this was a mistake. Let’s go.” (Did y’all see the cardboard cutout of Bishop though? That was kind of funny.)

Lady Mae, who is at the Greenleaf estate, is handling her blues in another way. She is fasting. Marisol the maid attempts to give her some sustenance. “At least, let me make you some tea,” she says to her. But Lady Mae refuses. Marisol points out that she could be fasting for at least 40 days regarding this matter. Of course, Lady Mae has a quip for that. “Jesus saved the whole human race in 40 days,” she points out. Then Charity shows up, and of course, she has more to say. She calls her daughter “Little Miss Benedictine Arnold” and tells her she is a “traitor to her whole family.” Wow. She’s right though…

And then Aaron, Grace’s half-brother, shows up. Now that the truth of Grace’s parentage has been revealed, she seems to be at peace with all that the revelation entailed. In other words, she is absolutely fine with Aaron the attorney now when before his presence used to perturb her. He tells her that he is at the estate to see Grace but until she shows up, the two talk. She tells him that she is fasting to get a sign from God regarding what the Greenleafs should do about the fact that H&H is demolishing the church. And if you remember from the final episode of Season 4, Lady Mae has agreed to lead the church along with Bob Whitmore as Bob requested. However, it seems that Lady Mae only agreed to Bob’s proposition to buy some time to hear from the Lord about what to try next. And the fast seems to be working but not in the way that was expected. She tells Aaron, “…But right now, I don’t even want that old church back.” With a quizzical look on his face, Aaron says, “Is the fast making you loopy?”

Bishop walks in then and addresses Aaron without saying a word Lady Mae. “He’s upset with me about a misconception,” she explains. Grace walks in next, and Aaron tells her he has something to tell her but he thinks A.J. should be there too.

You know who else has the blues? Jacob and Kerissa. In their suite, the two continue to “discuss”the terms of their divorce. Jacob calls Fernando Kerissa’s “Latin Lover” and says he is passing out wills and chlamydia! LOOOOLLLL!!! Kerissa ignores Jacob’s verbal jabs and plainly tells him that if she does not get what she wants in the divorce settlement, the will that somehow implicates the Greenleafs will be made public. Apparently, through the will, it is revealed that Uncle Mac was the executor of the estate and that a botched burglary led to the Greenleafs getting their home.

Speaking of challenged couples, Dante the basketball player and Sophia make plans to get together at his house later in the evening. However, Sophia lets it slip that Nikki, Dante’s former girlfriend, is still staying with Zora at the Greenleaf estate. Obviously, this situation is bound to cause conflict in this new season…

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face…

The plans to demolish the Calvary building and build the Memphis location of H&H Ministries continues. Inside the Calvary building, Phil DeMars and Charity see each other face to face for the first time during this episode. If you remember from the Season 4 finale episode, he tells Charity that instead of marrying her, he is marrying Bob Whitmore’s daughter Judee. I bet Charity regrets the first time she ever saw his face. He says, “God is good,” and she replies, “All the time.” (Does every churchgoing black person know that phrase?) He tries to figure out if she is going to cause any problems as the plans continue to proceed. A meeting with the deacons and other church leaders is coming up, and they will both need to meet with them. She says, “My family hates me. I have no love life.” Her associate pastor position at H&H is pretty much the only thing she has to look forward to going forward, she says. In other words, she doesn’t plan to make any trouble, but we know that couldn’t be true. Phil says, “I just want us to present a united front.” Charity responds with, “It will definitely be a front.” Bloop….

Back at the Greenleaf estate, Aaron meets with Grace to tell her what is going on regarding her son A.J.’s case. Also, A.J. is at the meeting. Aaron tells them that they no longer have to worry about A.J. turning himself into the authorities. Apparently, the A.J. doppelganger was discovered as the one who has been robbing pharmacies and selling drugs. Sadly, Aaron also reveals, the doppelganger (remember he was in all black in the Season 4 finale) was shot and killed the night before in some type of shoot-out. “The fact that the guy they’re blaming is dead is basically a miracle.” Aaron expects Grace and his nephew to be relieved at least about the fact that A.J. no longer has to turn himself in. But they seem to have mixed emotions…neither sad nor happy…Aaron says, “Should I call the cops and have them reopen the case?”

Speaking of unsolved mysteries, Darius Nash, Grace’s former boyfriend, is back. I thought they made a great couple, and it’s mystery to me why these two couldn’t make it work despite some of the issues they had. For right now, at least, Grace shows up at newspaper office where Darius works for professional reasons. “Tell me you’re not my new editor,” he says. When she tells him,”No,” he responds with, “Thank God.” He tells her that getting over her was difficult, but that doesn’t stop Grace from asking him for a “favor.” They discuss the A.J. doppelganger among other things. Grace wants Darius to use his sources to get to the truth regarding these matters. Just by their similar facial features alone, they would make at least a great looking couple!

Former couple Phil & Charity meet with the deacons and other church leaders and tell them that church members will be meeting in a gym for a year while the new church building is constructed. Charity makes it her business to tell them that they don’t have to fear being sheep without a shepherd although they are being temporarily displaced. She says she will feed them through her sermons. Charity, Charity, Charity. Aine nobody tryin’ to hear you preach. However, she does tell them that she is going to preach a series entitled “The Cornerstones of Faith: The Forgotten History of Black Women in the Church.” It sounds like a great series, but coming from Charity…Anywho, Phil gets a little uncomfortable with all the black stuff since H&H is supposed to be a multiracial church going forward. But Charity tells Phil that when Judee shows up and brings white members with her, she can preach about “vanilla, white Jesus and snow.” However, until then, it’s black like that. LOL. That was funny.

So Darius isn’t the only blast from the past as long we’re discussing couples. Remember Jacob and his mistress Alexa from Season 1? She’s baaack! Jacob goes to see her at her place.  And she doesn’t live alone. “You’ve got a kid?” “Yes,” she says with an attitude, “Her nap time is almost over so what do you need?”

Speaking of needing something, Carlton, Calvary’s choir director, shows up at Charity’s office. As much as he loves Charity, he tells her that he cannot “serve up Pinkberry hymns in a gym.” She starts crying when she realizes that he is quitting! He attempts to console her by saying, “We will still see each other socially.” But Charity says, “I wish I could quit too.”

Back at Alexa’s place, she can’t believe that Jacob is up in her face asking her for something. “You got me fired and thrown out of my church and the next church.” Jacob wants to find out what Alexa knows regarding Mac and this will since she was his assistant. Jacob reveals that he and Kerissa are getting a divorce. “She finally got sick of it,” Alexa says. Jacob says, “You married?” “Do you see a ring?” Alexa responds with as she holds her hand up in the air.

All the while, Jacob is staring at Alexa’s daughter, who is clearly biracial. Alexa finally addresses what Jacob is scared to ask. “Is she yours?” she says. “I would have never kept her if she had been yours.” Ouch. But I don’t believe her. (I guess we will find out more later.) In the mean time, Alexa does reveal that Mac kept a storage locker where Jacob can probably find out more information about this mysterious will. He then apologizes for the way things ended between the two. Obviously, Jacob will being seeing more of Alexa’s face as this season continues.

In the next scene, we see A.J.’s face. He is clearly troubled as he keeps throwing a small ball to the wall and back I guess to get rid of his nervous energy. Grace comes into her suite and can tell that A.J. is agitated. He says, “I did it, and we both know that I did it.” But Grace tries to convince him that his guilt doesn’t matter anymore. “No one knows who this kid is, and for whatever reason, it’s over. You’re free, and this guy paid the price.” At this point, I could not help but think of the sacrifice that Jesus made when He died on the cross. We are the sinners, but yet He paid for our sins with his death. Jesus’ sacrifice leads me to a theory about A.J.’s doppelganger that I will reveal later. Keep reading…

Grace finally says, “You’re free. I cannot pretend that I’m not incredibly happy about that.” Remember she gave up her position at Calvary to ensure that Phil DeMars didn’t tell that she made up an alibi for A.J. so this A.J. doppelganger seems like a blessing from God to her…even if somewhere inside of her, she’s not completely at peace either…

In another part of the house, Bishop meets with his former assistant Karine, her grandmother Clara and Misty, another woman in the church, about what is happening to Calvary. Apparently, they didn’t realize that they are going to be displaced for a year while the new H&H building is being constructed…That’s how the devil works. You think you’re signing up for one thing, and it’s only later when your decision can’t be undecided that you realize that there is a catch…

Speaking of someone else who is likely not a catch…at least Sophia’s catch…She shows up at Dante’s house for their planned evening, but his almost ex Nikki is there. Dante tells her what’s going on, and it’s clear that their relationships is not quite over. He offers to call her when Nikki leaves. She says, “I’m hurt, but I’m not mad.” Oh Sophia. And she is clearly no longer the saved and sanctified church girl as her back is all out in her outfit…

First Love…

Obviously, it’s good that Sophia’s plans are aren’t coming together as Grace is making dinner reservations for her and her children to celebrate. While she tries to make the reservation, however, Darius calls and tells her he knows why Bob Whitmore even came to Memphis in the first place…

Bishop, however, seems to not be worrying about Bob Whitmore anymore and you will know why soon. Marisol told Bishop about Lady Mae’s fast and what she wants to do – look for a new tactic to get the Whitmores to leave Calvary alone and a sign from God about how to proceed. So now that he knows that Lady Mae did not truly align herself with Bob, he wants to get aligned with her again. He goes to her and tells her about his meeting with the women from Calvary and how felt when he saw Calvary’s cross just being tossed in a truck like random trash.

 

He says they need to forego a “master plan” and instead, start a “day to day journey” toward a “new church.” And he says, he wants her to helm the church with him as the “sheep” still need shepherds, and her last “A Day With Lady Mae” showed him he had a powerful preacher in his helpmeet. He tells her the first thing they have to do to start this new journey is to get remarried in City Hall! “How’s that for a sign?” he says with a grin. Lady Mae says, “Are you crazy?” Bishop responds with, “At my age, the word is demented.” Awww…

So Bishop isn’t the only one pining away for lost love…I guess…In his swanky and contemporary digs, Phil stares at a picture of Charity…As if on cue, she shows up and Phil attempts to hide the picture of her so that she doesn’t realize that she has been on his mind…She attempts to give him his engagement ring back, but he tells her to keep it. He also tells her that he will always love her. Charity is rightfully confused and says she doesn’t know how he feels about anything much less her. “I don’t know how you feel about oxygen.” She concludes that he must at least like oxygen since he’s breathing, but other than that, she can come to no conclusions. Finally, Bob reveals why he has to marry Judee. If he doesn’t, Bob will not allow him to lead the new church, he reveals to her.. “I’ve been working for this for 20 years.”

In the mean time, Grace has arrived at the newspaper office and Darius reveals what he knows about Bob. The Phoenix, Arizona resident bought a home in Memphis roughly a year ago although he has yet to move in. Additionally, he has made donations to several local charities. Apparently, Bob, who is a Republican, is interested in running for a Senate seat. He needs to establish his residency and a reputation as a giver. And a multicultural church led by H&H would convince potential voters that he is for everyone…Hmm…But Grace thinks it’s too late to use this information to stop the demolition of Calvary, but Darius says to Grace, “Have a little faith.” So is Darius returning to his Christian roots? If I’m remembering correctly, I think he left the church due to church hurt…Saints, help me out here…

But before the two can put their heads together to work out a plan to overthrow the Whitmores, Grace gets a text that she has been invited to a wedding. And when she goes back to the Greenleaf estate, she realizes that all of her family has gathered there for this wedding. Bishop tells them that he and Lady Mae are heading to City Hall, and they are invited to come along (even Charity) in a caravan of vehicles from the estate. In his joy, Bishop tells Zora that he wants their wedding on Instacart…LOL…He meant Instagram…And Zora fixes her mouth to call her cousin a “skank.” As if she can talk…

But in all of the hubbub, one person is missing: A.J. Grace goes up to her suite and cannot find him. However, a bathroom door is locked, and she suspects he is in there. When she frantically calls his name, and he doesn’t respond, she slams against the door until it comes open. To her shock, there is A.J. on the ground. He is clearly dead or nearly dead as he slit his wrists I think…That was a jarring scene, right? How very sad…

Well, I have a theory about this. As I said before, what this A.J. doppelganger did for A.J. reminds me of what Jesus did for all of us. Judas Iscariot from the Bible felt so guilty about betraying Jesus that he later killed himself. I think that the A.J. doppelganger was the real A.J. and somehow the real A.J. told the fake one what happened to him and the fake one assumed the real one’s identity. Maybe they were in jail together at one point. And when the real A.J. was killed, it was too much for the fake A.J. to handle and so he committed suicide. How else did the A.J. doppelganger know Grace’s name when he “wandered” onto the Greenleaf estate?

Do you have a theory?!

At any rate, and I say this every season…but’s true every season…this is gonna be an exciting season for sure…

Greenleaf Recap Season 3 Episode 10: The Promised Land…

I know many saints don’t celebrate Halloween but clearly OWN Greenleaf writers had some tricks up their sleeve on this Halloween night that I will reveal in this Greenleaf Recap Season 3 Episode 10: The Promised Land so keep readin’ y’all…

Promises Promises…

This episode starts with a solemn scene as Lady Mae is at her laptop at Calvary alone and late into the night. She crafts an e-mail to her children and grandchildren confirming what we have feared since Season 3 began: Bishop and Lady Mae are legally divorced. I must say I didn’t think this would actually happen and I still wonder if the all of the “t”s have been crossed and the “i”s have been dotted as far as the documentation is concerned. Despite the dismantling of the family she and Bishop have built for more than 40 years, Lady Mae tells them they are still entering the Promised Land that they must take possession of with hope. She says she is aware of their “past sins but they are ready to grow. We are no longer married but we are still your parents.” She refers to them as her angels before she ends the correspondence.

In the next scene, Jacob and Kerissa are playing detective over at Triumph as Tasha Skanks has left without a trace and reason why although we (the audience) know what’s up. Kerissa speculates that maybe Basie is back, but Jacob feels that if Basie had returned, he would have have heard something. “Memphis ain’t that big and Basie ain’t that small.” (That’s a nice line.) At any rate, now that Tasha is gone and Kerissa has turned Zora over to God, Kerissa is finally available to take on all of the duties of a First Lady. She hires a new accountant. He has an African accent I think. He promptly notices some irregularities in the accounting…

At Calvary the next day, Grace and Rochelle meet with the murderess (per Lady Mae’s description) Coralie Hunter. Coralie is seriously considering the deal the district attorney offered her although she will be in jail for 20 years. 20 years in jail is better than life in jail after all. Grace pleads with Coralie to allow the lawyer they’ve hired to advocate on her behalf as this case is expected to set a precedent. Coralie aine tryin’ to hear that legal jargon, but Rochelle gets to her with a personal plea. She tells Coralie that her mother went to jail, forcing her and her little sister to be in the system and moved around like “hot potatoes that nobody wanted. I know that you don’t believe in Jesus but you’re going to have to have faith.” That story does the trick and Coralie meets with the new attorney.

Following that meeting, Bishop happens to walk by Rochelle, who is in a conference room at Calvary by herself. She takes the opportunity to ask him about the rumors she has heard. “Are you legally divorced?” she asks. Bishop confirms the rumors are true. “Lady Mae and I are officially no longer together.” Of course that news brings a smile to Rochelle’s face. She invites Bishop to do some “daytime drinking to celebrate or console as the case may be.” Bishop says he would like that. Maybe I’m a sheltered pastor’s daughter but I don’t know any pastor who is quick to sip like that! What y’all think?

The time for “A Day With Lady Mae” is almost here as Maxine Patterson is back! Lady Mae tells Maxine that Bishop looks “lost in his own church. Maxine replies with, “It’s won’t be his for long.”

Y’all know that’s a promise that Lady Mae intends to keep…

It’s A Long Way To The Promised Land…

Zora is back. I must admit I appreciated a break from that hellion in last’s week episode but like a bad weed, she’s back. Zora and Isaiah, the boy she was willing to turn her back on her family for, are at a radio station 104. 8 FM where he is answering interview questions about his latest project. He says the project addresses the “tribulations on tribulations” he’s endured and that it is an “amalgamation of pain.” Yeah, whatever man…moving on…I don’t know about the rest of the family but Zora will not be entering into her own promised land for some time.

Charity is back in her office at Calvary and looking mighty composed actually. Maxine’s music director, a hottie I’ve seen before on some show but cannot remember exactly where I’ve seen him, stops by to discuss how they will move forward with plans for the music included in “A Day With Lady Mae.” Charity starts to discuss a few ideas, but before she goes too long, the music director Michael asks if they can pause to pray. He was already fine, but now, he’s looking irresistible and by the look in her eyes, Charity agrees with me!

The two continue to converse and Michael asks Charity to dinner. She declines because she has to care for her son on the night in question. Michael mistakenly thinks that since she has a son that she is married and apologizes for asking her out. Charity says that she is actually divorced. She also chooses to reveal that her ex-husband is gay only because Michael may see Kevin at some point while he is in town. Michael apologizes for her ex-husband’s deception and says that “sort of deception is susceptible to prayer.”

Maxine Patterson also has some ideas about how to plan “A Day With Lady Mae” but Lady Mae disagrees with Maxine’s directions. Maxine wants Grace to be a part of the program for example, but Lady Mae suggests Jacinta Butler instead. Maxine asks Lady Mae if the theme for the event is “She Changes Everything” or is it “She Puts Everyone to Sleep?” LOL.  Maxine notices that Lady Mae has some sort of block when it comes her own daughter and asks her what is the deal with that. Karine interrupts the planning session to tell Lady Mae that Lionel Jeffries is on the phone, but she aine tryin’ to hear him either.

Maxine, without Lady Mae at her hip, eventually sees Grace alone and uses the opportunity to ask her about her legal defense fund. She decides to contribute. But she also uses the time to ask Grace about her troubled relationship with her mother. “What’s that all about?” Grace responds with “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” That’s right Grace. Keep family business in the family unless you’re in therapy 🙂

Speaking of troubled family relationships, Rochelle tracks down her sister-in-law Tasha at her home. “Why aren’t you at Triumph?” Rochelle asks her. “I quit,” Tasha spits out.  She adds, “The funds have already been transferred from Triumph.” In other words, Tasha wants Rochelle to just leave her alone, but Tasha has more to say first. “You’re messing with an innocent man,” she says in reference to Jacob. “He’s a good man, Rochelle.” Now Rochelle is perturbed. “Are you in love with him?” She doesn’t outright answer the question but she asks Rochelle about the whereabouts of that “no account nothing brother of yours.” She then escalates the conversation even more. “If you come back here, I will call the cops. And I might forget what story I’m supposed to tell them.” Rochelle calls Basie afterward. “We’ve got a problem,” she says. Basie and Rochelle thought they were finally on the fast track to their promised land, but there continue to be road blocks.

The Promise…

Y’all know that Grace is gangsta right? While Rochelle was talking about her childhood in foster care with Coralie, Grace was taking mental notes. Later on, she tells Darius to use his network of contacts to find out more information about a Rochelle who grew up in foster care with her sister and Darius obliges. He tells that there were three girls named Rochelle but only one could be their Rochelle and he even has a foster mother to interview! Rochelle, you ’bout to be discovered chile. That’s a promise.

But while we wait for that to unfold, Rochelle has more business with Bishop. Now that Bishop is single, she is passing time with him out in the open on Percy’s porch no less. (Percy does not make an appearance on this episode though.) Bishop complains that he is “running a church from the guest room of a house next door to a mortuary.” Rochelle promises to help him find a new place and the two drink champagne to that. They don’t kiss as far as I can tell but they do nuzzle.

Another couple that I don’t like are figuring out their way around each other as well. Now that Zora is free is a bird, she mistakenly feels that freedom will be a part of her relationship with Isaiah. But that is not the case. She tells compliments him on the presales of his album and casually mentions that she forgot she applied to Spelman College. Apparently, the couple now reside in Atlanta where the school is located. She is thinking of setting up an interview, but instead of encouraging Zora to continue her education, Isaiah criticizes her. He says “Spelman doesn’t take high school drop outs.” Ouch. She should have stayed in school. But Zora calls him out on not claiming her during the radio interview to a female fan. He says, “I’ll claim you when you start acting like someone who deserves me.” He also knocks some food out of her hand. It looks like she decides to contact Spelman anyway, secretly of course so that her behind won’t be beat. I just don’t get it. Has he made some promises to her that we are not aware of because I just don’t get the attraction…

But maybe it’s just a case of the apple not falling far from the tree. Kerissa calls Tasha about her leaving Triumph in such a hurry. Tasha, who sounds high or drunk or both, says, “Why are you you calling me all mad? It was just a kiss. Don’t hate me Kerissa.” Now Kerissa knows that Jacob is up to his old tricks again and has not kept his promise to be faithful. At Triumph, Kerissa calls Jacob “trifling” and says that he is supposed to be a “strong tower” for the family and is nothing but a “twig.” In fact, he is worse than a twig. He is a “puddle of need, desires and bad decisions.” Wow, but he deserved every bit of that rebuke and probably more. But on the other hand, Kerissa continued to stay with Jacob through all of his past philandering and maybe that was the pattern that Zora observed growing up: My man may abuse me in a myriad of ways, but I shall stay and be abused any way. And in the midst of all of us, the new accountant interrupts them to tell them that $200,000 is missing from the church’s account!

Back at the Greenleaf estate, Charity answer’s Michael phone call. Since she was busy with her son on the night he originally wanted to go out to dinner, he asks her out for another night. She agrees at first, but tells him that something he said about her ex-husband got under her skin. He says that Kevin deceived her about that “struggle with his sin” but Charity doesn’t approve of how he describes Kevin. Michael says, “Charity, you deserve better,” and Charity responds with, “Maybe that’s not you.” So this is some growth for Charity. Usually, she just accepts any positive attention she gets without being selective about the source.

Across town, Darius and Grace go to see the woman who may have been one of Rochelle’s foster mothers. At first, she doesn’t remember Rochelle particularly with the last name Cross, but she does remember a Rochelle James who had a little sister! Gigi wastes no time in telling her father what she discovers. She goes over to Percy’s house to tell him in person. He has some news to share as well, but he allows her to go first. “Rochelle Cross is Daryl James’ daughter. She is the half-sister to Basie Skanks.”

Bishop looks crushed and we never find out what was his news. Maybe we will find out in a future episode.

Speaking of hidden identities and this is THE SHOCKER of the night, Lady Mae pays a visit to Lionel Jeffries in the nursing home. “What do you want Lionel?” she says. “I want to talk about my daughter!” Y’all, we’ve been wondering why in the world does Lady Mae hates her daughter so much. Even Maxine Patterson is perplexed. But now we know!!! I don’t know if a paternity test was ever conducted to confirm it but that is one reason among others in my opinion why Lady Mae is less than fond of Grace. And Grace is the oldest child too! You mean her first child wasn’t even Bishop’s? That’s crazy! (Oh, I don’t recall Lionel ever saying Grace’s name  so it’s possible that he may be referring to another one of Lady Mae’s daughters although that is not likely to me. What y’all think?!)

Speaking of crazy, Rochelle comes back to Tasha’s house and Tasha gets a lamp. I guess she is going to attack her sister-in-law with it, but before she does that, she sees Basie at the door!!!

Yes, my favorite short man character since George Jefferson is back! Brother and sister are both dressed in black. Basie says, “I’ve heard you’ve been a bad girl!” LOL. The funny thing is that Tasha looks like she loves some Basie too even while she was pining way for Jacob for the whole episode. But who doesn’t love a bad boy with some attitude unless it’s one who hits you like Isaiah. That’s another matter altogether. Anywho, that’s it and that’s all…
